Privacy Policy

Last updated September 30, 2026

The short version: BD Devs collects what you give us to run your account and the community features you use. We don't sell your data, we don't run ads, and we don't use third-party analytics or tracking. Most of what you post is public by design; your email address and password never are.

This policy explains how BD Devs (“we”, “us”) handles personal information when you use this website. By using BD Devs you agree to this policy together with our Terms of Service.

What we collect

Information you give us

  • Account details — your name, email address and, if you sign up with email, a password. Passwords are stored only as a one-way hash (bcrypt); we can't read them.
  • Sign-in with GitHub or Google — if you use one of these, we receive your name, email address, profile picture and an account identifier from that provider, plus the access tokens it issues. We don't receive your GitHub or Google password.
  • Profile information — anything you add in Settings, such as your username, photo, cover image, bio, pronouns, birthday, location and district, job title, company, experience, education, skills, languages and links to other sites. All of it is optional except your name and username.
  • Content — articles, comments, questions and answers, projects, job posts, interview experiences, salary reports and images you upload.
  • Job applications — the note and portfolio link you send when you apply to a job.
  • Reports — when you report content, the reason and any details you write.

Information created as you use the site

  • Likes, bookmarks, follows and notifications.
  • Article view counts. To count each reader once, we store a random identifier in a cookie and record it against the article. It is not linked to your account, name or IP address.
  • Standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested) kept by our hosting provider for security and troubleshooting.

How we use it

  • To create and secure your account and keep you signed in.
  • To show your profile and content to other members and visitors.
  • To send notifications about activity on your content, and — unless you turn it off — a weekly digest email with jobs matching your skills and popular articles.
  • To match you with relevant jobs and show you in the developer directory.
  • To review reports, enforce our Terms and prevent spam and abuse.
  • To calculate aggregate salary statistics.

We don't sell personal information and we don't use it for advertising.

What is public

BD Devs is a public community, so please post with that in mind.

  • Public: your name, username, photo, cover, and the profile fields you fill in; your published articles, comments, questions, answers, projects and job posts; your followers and following.
  • Birthday: hidden unless you turn on “Show birthday on profile”, and even then only the day and month are shown — never the year or your age.
  • Salary reports: never shown individually or with your name. Figures only appear as aggregates, and only once at least three different people have reported for that group.
  • Interview experiences: posted anonymously by default. Your name is shown only if you choose to post under it.
  • Job applications: visible only to you and the person who posted the job.
  • Never public: your email address, password, drafts, bookmarks and the reports you file.

Sharing & service providers

We share information only as needed to run the service, with providers who process it on our behalf:

  • Microsoft Azure — hosts the website, database and uploaded files.
  • Resend — delivers notification and digest emails, so it receives your email address and the email content.
  • GitHub and Google — only if you choose to sign in with them.
  • jsDelivr — when you open the emoji picker, your browser downloads emoji data from this public CDN, which can see your IP address like any website you load.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or where necessary to protect the safety of our users or the public, or the integrity of the service.

Cookies

We only use cookies needed for the site to work. There are no advertising or analytics cookies.

  • Sign-in session — keeps you signed in.
  • theme — remembers whether you picked light, dark or system theme.
  • bddevs_viewer — the random identifier used to count article views once per reader. It lasts up to one year.

Retention & deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can edit or delete your articles, comments and other content at any time, and clear any profile field in Settings.

To delete your account, contact us at our contact address (coming soon). Deleting an account removes your profile and the content attached to it, including your articles, comments, applications and reports. Anonymous aggregate statistics, backups kept for a limited period, and information we must keep for legal reasons may remain.

Your choices & rights

  • Access and correction — most of your information is visible and editable in Settings.
  • Email — turn off the weekly digest in Settings or with the unsubscribe link in any digest email.
  • Deletion or a copy of your data — contact us and we'll respond within 30 days.

Security

We use HTTPS, hash passwords, check uploaded files, and limit access to personal information to what is needed to run the service. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password. If we learn of a breach affecting your information, we will notify you as the law requires.

Children

BD Devs is not intended for children under 13, and you must be at least 13 to create an account. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service changes. We'll change the “Last updated” date above, and for significant changes we'll notify signed-in members on the site or by email.
